John Murray, 11th Duke of Atholl KStJ (born January 19, 1929 in Johannesburg , † May 15, 2012 in South Africa ) was a South African-born Scottish peer and chief of the Murray clan .

life and career

Murray was born in Johannesburg, South Africa , the only child of George Murray (1884-1940) from his marriage to Joan Eastwood. His father was a major in the Royal Field Artillery and died in active military service in 1940 during World War II . He was the great, great-great-grandson of the Right Reverend Lord George Murray († 1860), Bishop of Sodor and Man and Bishop of Rochester , the second son of John Murray, 3rd Duke of Atholl .

He studied engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand , a leading South African university, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree . He worked as a land surveyor.

Duke of Atholl

In February 1996, at the age of 67, at the death of his third nephew George Murray, 10th Duke of Atholl , Murray inherited his title and a seat in the House of Lords . As Duke of Atholl, he was also the hereditary clan chief of Clan Murray and Colonel-in-Chief of the Atholl Highlanders , the ceremonial bodyguard of the Dukes and "only legal private army in Europe ". The Atholl Highlanders are stationed at the historic ancestral home of the Dukes of Atholl, Blair Castle . This had already been transferred to a foundation under the 10th Duke. Nevertheless, the unit was visited by him every year, when visiting the troops. He was a crossbencher in the House of Lords . He lost his parliamentary seat through the House of Lords Act 1999 . He did not run for a by-election to the House of Lords.

Family and death

Murray married Margaret Yvonne "Peggy" Leach on December 15, 1956, the only daughter of Ronald Leonard Leach. They had three children together.

He lived in Haenertsburg in the South African province of Limpopo . He died on May 15, 2012 in a South African hospital at the age of 83. His eldest son, Bruce Murray , inherited his title as the 12th Duke of Atholl.

Honors

On November 17, 2010, Murray became a Knight of the Order of Saint John (K.St.J.).
