John Purcell Nicholson (born September 2, 1936 in Liverpool , † September 3, 1966 in Doncaster ) was an English football player .

Career

Nicholson came in January 1957 from the Liverpool amateur football for Liverpool . Liverpool was playing in the Second Division at the time , with Dick White on Nicholson's position as the center runner . For his only competitive game for Liverpool, Nicholson came on October 10, 1959 in a 2-2 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion in front of 30,000 spectators at Anfield Road , the only game White missed. With the arrival of middle runner Ron Yeats in the summer of 1961, Nicholson's time at Liverpool FC was up and he moved to the Third Division at Port Vale for a transfer fee of £ 2,000 .

His debut for Port Vale on September 2, 1961 was followed by a series of 208 competitive games in a row in the league, the FA Cup and the League Cup , which lasted until September 8, 1965 . In the seasons 1962/63, 1963/64 and 1964/65, in which the club had to relegate to the Fourth Division , he played all season games. After losing his place on the team in September 1965, he immediately submitted a transfer request, which, much to the annoyance of the fans, was granted that same month. Nicholson moved for £ 5,000 to league rivals Doncaster Rovers , with whom he immediately established himself as a regular and with whom he rose to the third division in 1966 as champion of the fourth division. The day after his 30th birthday, Nicholson died in a car accident in Doncaster .
