John Eric Pommer , born in Hans Eckhardt Hermann Pommer (born February 26, 1916 in Danzig , German Reich ; † July 26, 2014 in Los Angeles , USA), was a German-American film producer , production manager and assistant director for Anglo-American film.

Life

The son of the German film producer Erich Pommer followed his father into exile in 1933 at the age of 17. In 1935 he was based in Beverly Hills and followed his father to England the following year. It was there that Hans Eckhardt Hermann Pommer began his cinematic career under the anglicized pseudonym John Pommer in 1936 as the third assistant director for the major productions Rembrandt and Elefanten-Boy by Alexander Korda , a good friend of Erich Pommers from their days in Berlin. Back in the USA, Pommer junior continued his work as an assistant director and found work with directors his father also knew from German times, especially Wilhelm Dieterle , who placed John Pommer on The Hunchback of Notre Dame . Almost at the same time, the 23-year-old became a US citizen in December 1939.

After the war, John Pommer continued his career, but from then on only found employment in second- and third-rate cheap films, especially westerns. In 1952 he switched to television and was brought in as an assistant director for several series and series. John Pommer first worked in production management as early as 1948, two years later he served as a production assistant for the anti-war film Decision Before Dawn, which was shot in Germany . Without having personally made films as a producer, Pommer has now been hired in a managerial role as production manager and production executive for television series, including The Bing Crosby Show in the mid-1960s . Then Pommer worked almost exclusively for Crosby's own production company from the beginning of the 1970s and was therefore mainly involved in the production of cinema films in that decade.

In 1980 John Pommer retired. During his life in California, he lived in Camarillo , Encino and Woodland Hills .
