John Pond

John Pond (* 1767 in London , † September 7, 1836 in Blackheath , London) was an English astronomer.

Life

In 1811 Pond became director of the Greenwich Observatory and thus the (sixth) Royal Astronomer ( Astronomer Royal ).

In 1814 he was elected a foreign member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . In 1816 he became a corresponding member of the Académie des Sciences . In 1822 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , in 1823 he was awarded the Copley Medal . In 2009 the asteroid (7542) Johnpond was named after him.
