John Radetich

John Radetich (* 1948 in Jerome , Arizona ) is a retired American athlete. He was one of the best high jumpers in the world in the 1970s .

Life

After graduating from San Carlos High School in Redwood City , California , he got a high jumper scholarship at Oregon State University , where coach Carl “Berny” Wagner had brought together the best high jumpers in the world (three 6-foot jumpers at the same time ). In this training group u. a. with Dwight Stones , Radetich learned both the straddle and the flop . He was the only one who could jump 2.13 m in both techniques. At the US Olympic Trials for the 1968 and 1972 Olympic Games, Radetich was eighth. After the 1972 Olympics , he joined the professional sports group of the International Track Association . After he was only allowed to work as a sports teacher due to American amateur regulations, he was able to work both as a professional athlete and as a trainer. As a professional, he was the first to set a (indoor) world record in 1973 with the flop of 2.255 m . He coached Linn Benton Community College , South Albany High School , West Albany High School, and Philomath High School and Community College before becoming the Sporting Director of the Boys & Girls Club in Albany, Oregon for 29 years . After his retirement, he has been a successful high jump trainer at Oregon State University since 2010.
