John Ray Dunning

John Ray Dunning (born September 24, 1907 in Shelby , Nebraska , † August 25, 1975 in Key Biscayne , Florida ) was an American nuclear physicist. He was involved in the development of nuclear weapons .

Dunning graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University in 1929 . In 1934 he received his PhD from Columbia University . In 1936 he directed the construction of a cyclotron . In 1935 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society .

Dunning was able to reproduce and verify the experiments of Otto Hahn and Fritz Straßmann on nuclear fission . In 1940 Dunning's group was able to show that the uranium isotope 235 U is more suitable for nuclear fission than 238 U.

In 1948 he was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences .
