John Reading

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John Reading (* approx. 1645 in Lincoln ; † 1692 in Winchester ) was an English composer and organist and probably the father of John Reading II (approx. 1685–1764), who was an important music copyist.

Little is known of Reading's life. Born in Lincoln , he became Master of the Choirboys at Lincoln Cathedral in 1670 and Chichester Cathedral and Winchester Cathedral in 1675 . From 1681 until his death he was the organist at Winchester College . Here he set the college's Latin prayers to music as well as the school song Dulce donum . 166 anthems were added by Reading to the collection "The Winchester Organ Book" ("The Berkeley Organ Book"), which was supplemented by Daniel Roseingrave . He also composed songs, theatrical music and part of a series of response chants. He died in Winchester .

Among the four English musicians of the same name who worked at the end of the 17th century, the London organist John Reading II (1667–1764) is named as a possible composer of the famous Christmas carol Adeste fideles . However, this information is based solely on a memory by the music publisher Vincent Novello (1781–1861) and is otherwise unproven. The exact family relationship is unclear.
