John Renard

John Renard (born 1944 ) is an American Islamic scholar and orientalist with a focus on Islamic theology and art history .

life and work

John Renard was born in 1944. He joined the Jesuit Order in 1962 and was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 1973. He earned his BA (Philosophy and Classical Languages) and MA (Biblical Literature) from St. Louis University . His Ph.D. (1978) graduated in Islamic Studies from Harvard University in the Department of Near Eastern Languages ​​and Civilizations . Since 1978 he has been Associate Professor of Theological Studies at St. Louis University. He specialized in medieval religious literature in Arabic and Persian. His dissertation dealt with the prophetology of the great Sufi Jalal ad-Din Rumi from the 13th century and was later published under the title All the King Falcons: Rumi on Prophets and Revelation (1994). He is a professor in the Department of Theology at Saint Louis University. Since 1978 he has taught Islamic studies, the history of religion and comparative theology.

His publications cover a wide range. He is the author of more than a dozen books and many articles, book chapters, encyclopedia articles and reviews.

Paul Renard lived for many years married to his wife Mary Pat in St. Louis ( Missouri ).
