John Robert Howe
John Robert Howe (* 1861 in Killarney , Australia ; † July 1, 1920 in Blackall ), also called Jackie Howe , was a sheep shearer who set the first record in sheep shearing in 1892 when he sheared 237 sheep in one day. His weekly record was 1437 sheep.
John Robert Howe was the son of John Howe, a circus acrobat and future drover, and his wife Loiuisa Stokes. Howe began working as a sheep shearer in late 1870, spent a shear season in New Zealand and settled in Blackall. He was a Roman Catholic and married Margaret Alexandra Victoria Short on April 24, 1890.
He was exceptionally muscular and well built, his biceps were 43 centimeters in circumference and he weighed 114 kilograms. He was already famous during his lifetime and presented the first mechanical sheep shearing machines in Australia. The blue shirt of the Australian sheep shearer Jacky Howe is named after him .
He was an active trade unionist who participated in the first sheep shearers strike in 1891 and the second sheep shearers strike in 1894 . Howe served on the Sheep Shearers' Union Strike Committee and the Labor Party, and was a good friend of Thomas Joseph Ryan , who first became Prime Minister of Queensland as a member of the Australian Labor Party .
