Bajacalifornia is a genus of fish belonging to the blackhead family. It was in 1925 by Charles Haskins Townsend and John Treadwell Nichols based on the type Bajacalifornia burragei described in 1911 during the deep-sea expedition of the research vessel Albatross off the coast of Bahia de Todos Santos in Baja California ( Span. Baja California was discovered).

features

The body is covered with small cycloid scales. The ventral scales are well developed. The mouth is moderately wide, but larger than that of the genus Alepocephalus . The lower jaw protrudes strongly and ends in a pointed button that is directed obliquely forward. The margins of the jaw show a single row of small teeth. The gill trap openings are wide, the gill membranes are connected below. The short dorsal and anal fins are about the same length.

Occurrence

The distribution area of this genus extends from the Indian Ocean over the Sea of Japan to the East Pacific Ridge .

Systematics

The genus Bajacalifornia includes seven species. Bajacalifornia burragei is the type species described in 1925. In 1952, the ichthyologist Albert Eide Parr classified the species Cyclothone megalops, described by Christian Frederik Lütken in 1898, and the taxon Bathytroctes calcaratus, described by Max Wilhelm Carl Weber in 1913, into this genus. In 1977 Bajacalifornia erimoensi , 1985 Bajacalifornia arcylepis , 1988 Bajacalifornia microstoma and 1993 Bajacalifornia aequatoris were described.
