John RL Allen

John Robert Lawrence Allen (* 1932 ) is a British geologist ( sedimentology , archaeological geology). He is a professor at the University of Reading .

Allen studied geology at the University of Sheffield with the degree in 1955. From 1958 he was with a Martin Lee Research Fellowship at the University of Reading, where he was 1961 Lecturer , 1967 Reader and 1972 Professor. In 1988 he became director of the newly established Postgraduate Research Institute in Sedimentology in Reading. In 2001 he retired. But he also supervised master’s degrees in geoarchaeology afterwards.

First, he dealt with sedimentology, especially of rivers, and especially estuary areas in Great Britain (such as the Severn) and France, which he combined with archaeological studies. His study of the geological history of the Niger Delta also had applications to the oil industry.

In 1980 he received the Lyell Medal and in 1996 the Penrose Medal . He is a Fellow of the Royal Society (1979). He received the William H. Twenhofel Medal in 1987 and the GK Warren Prize of the American Academy of Sciences in 1990. He is an honorary doctorate from the University of Reading.
