John Ross Robertson

John Ross Robertson (born December 28, 1841 in Toronto , Ontario , † May 31, 1918 ) was a Canadian publisher , philanthropist , politician and ice hockey official .

Life

In 1867 he founded the Toronto Evening Telegram, a conservative newspaper that was published until 1971. Although he had never played ice hockey, he showed a keen interest in the sport. Robertson was against the professionalization of ice hockey and campaigned for the preservation of the amateur sport. In 1896 he was elected as an independent Conservative MP in the Canadian House of Commons . In 1899 he was elected President of the Ontario Hockey Association and remained so until 1905. Two years later he donated trophies for the winners of the OHA. He later became Honorary President of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Organization. The Ontario Hockey League championship trophy , which he originally donated himself, was named the J. Ross Robertson Cup in his honor .

In 1947 he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame .
