Sir John Savile of Thronhill († 1482 ) was an English knight .

Life

Sir John was a son of Sir Thomas Savile and Margaret, daughter of Thomas Pilkington.

He began his career in 1441 in the Hundred Years War under Richard Plantagenet, 3rd Duke of York . Richard Plantagenet John Savile also received the 1442 accolade . Sir John was elected to Parliament for Yorkshire in 1450 and was high sheriff of the county in 1454/55, 1459 and 1461.

He owned a number of estates and lands, such as in Estrington, Thurlestone, Thornhill, Hunsworth, Ovenden and Wadsworth. Sir John was a devoted supporter of the House of York and was an important steward to Richard the Duke of York as Chief Steward of Wakefield and Constable of Sandal Castle .

During the Wars of the Roses , Sir John fought for York in 1455 at the First Battle of St Albans and in 1461 at Towton . Whether Sir John took part in the Battle of Wakefield in 1460 is not known, but it is very likely, as the battle took place not far from Sandal Castle and also from his personal seat in Thornhill.

In the years 1467 to 1475 Sir John was commissioned by King Edward IV. As Justice of Peace with regulatory tasks in the county of Yorkshire.

Sir John died on January 2, 1482 at Sandal Castle and was buried in the Church of St. Michael and all Angels at Thronhill.
