John Spilman

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sir John Spilman (possibly also Spielman * 16th century in Lindau (Lake Constance) ; † 1626 in Dartford , Kent , England ) was an entrepreneur who founded England's first, commercially successful paper mill in River Darenth in 1588 , at the same time he was court jeweler to Queen Elizabeth I. . Spilman was King James I knighted .

Life

John Spilman was married to the Nuremberg merchant daughter Elisabeth Mergel, who died in 1607 at the age of 55. His second wife, Katherine, survived and died in 1644. These marriages resulted in several children.

In 1588 Spilman leased two paper mills on the Bignores estate near Dartford. These paper mills were previously leased to landowner William Vaughan, who died in 1580. Spilman repaired and modernized the production facilities for an estimated 1,500 pounds sterling and requisitioned skilled German skilled workers and decision makers to produce a good quality white paper under the Spillers brand . One of the first works published on Spielman's paper was a poem by Thomas Churchyard dedicated to Sir Walter Raleigh . With around 600 employees, Spilmans paper mills became the most important employer in the region. In February 1589, Spilman was granted a patent that gave him a monopoly on the purchase of certain raw materials and the manufacture of pure white paper. In July 1597, the patent was extended for a further 14 years and successfully secured the market for high-quality and high-priced white paper, whereas his competitors only had the option of producing inferior brown paper.

John Spilman was probably in 1605 by King James more for his services as court goldsmith because as a paper manufacturer, the Knights defeated the same time he received an estate in Bexley, which he resold to William Camden.

Spilman has been credited with introducing linden trees to Britain.

John Spilman died in 1626 and was buried in the Dartford Holy Trinity Church.
