John Stanmeyer

John Stanmeyer (* 1964 in Illinois ) is an American photographer and photojournalist .

life and work

As a photographer, he documented, among other things, the political upheavals in Eastern Europe, the conflicts in South Sudan , the war in Afghanistan , the effects of the earthquake in the Indian Ocean in 2004 and the unrest in East Timor in 2006 .

In 1996 he moved to Hong Kong and lived in Asia for 12 years. He worked for the National Geographic Society and from 1998 to 2008 for Time Magazine . During this time, 18 of his photographs were used as Time covers. In 2001 he founded the VII Photo Agency with six other international photojournalists . In 2012 he shot the documentary Starved for Attention .

In 1999 he received the Robert Capa Gold Medal and in 2008 the National Magazine Award . His photo of African refugees in Djibouti was named Press Photo of the Year 2013.

He lives with his wife Anastasia Stan Meyer and their three children on a farm in the Berkshire Mountains in Massachusetts .
