John Stephen Cummins

John Stephen Cummins (born March 3, 1928 in Oakland ) is a former Roman Catholic Bishop of Oakland .

Life

John Stephen Cummins, son of Irish immigrants, was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of San Francisco on January 24, 1953 . From 1962 he headed the office of the newly established Diocese of Oakland. In February 1971, he was appointed executive director of the California Regional Bishops' Conference.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on February 26, 1974 auxiliary bishop in Sacramento and titular bishop in Lambaesis . The Bishop of Sacramento, Alden John Bell , ordained him episcopal on May 16 of that year ; Co- consecrators were Floyd Lawrence Begin , Bishop of Oakland, and Hugh Aloysius Donohoe , Bishop of Fresno . On May 3, 1977 he was by Paul VI. Appointed Bishop of Oakland and inducted into office on June 30 of that year. From 1988 to 1997, Cummins was President of the Bishops' Conference of California.

On October 1, 2003, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.
