John Stewart (politician, before 1789)

John Stewart (* before 1789, † 1820 in Elmwood , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . Between 1801 and 1805 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Neither John Stewart's date of birth nor his place of birth have been recorded. He attended preparatory schools. There is also no information about his professional career. Stewart was involved in politics and was a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania from 1789 to 1796 . Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson in the late 1790s .

After Thomas Hartley's death , Stewart was elected in the eighth constituency of Pennsylvania as his successor in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he took up his new mandate on January 15, 1801. After two re-elections, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1805 . During his tenure as Congressman in 1803, the Louisiana Purchase made by President Jefferson, the United States was significantly expanded. In 1804 the twelfth amendment was ratified. Since 1803 Stewart represented the sixth district of his state in Congress.

There is also no information about his activities after the end of his time as a congressman. The exact date of his death is also unknown. It is only noted that he died in Elmwood, York County in 1820 and was buried on his estate there.
