John A. Hanna

John Andre Hanna (* 1762 in Flemington , Province of New Jersey , †  July 23, 1805 in Harrisburg , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . Between 1797 and 1805 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Hanna received a classical school education and graduated from Princeton College in 1782 . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1783, he began to work in Lancaster in this profession. In 1785 he moved his residence and law firm to Harrisburg. At the same time Hanna embarked on a political career. In 1787 he was a delegate to the assembly that ratified the United States Constitution for the state of Pennsylvania . In 1788 he was secretary of the Anti-Federal Conference . In 1791 he became a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania . In addition, Hanna was active in the state militia, in which he rose from lieutenant colonel to major general between 1792 and 1800. He was also involved in cracking down on the Whiskey Rebellion in 1794 . Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson in the late 1790s .

In the congressional election of 1796 , Hanna was elected to the US House of Representatives in the sixth constituency of Pennsylvania, where he succeeded Samuel Maclay on March 4, 1797 . After four re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on July 23, 1805 . Since 1803 he represented the fourth district of his state there. During his tenure as Congressman in 1803, the Louisiana Purchase made by President Jefferson, the United States was significantly expanded. In 1804 the twelfth amendment was ratified. In addition, the new federal capital Washington, DC was moved into in 1800 .

John Hanna's grandson Archibald McAllister (1813-1883) was also a member of Congress.
