John Vande Velde

John Charles Vande Velde (* 15. November 1950 in Chicago ) is a former US - track cyclist and sports official. The two-time Olympian (1968 and 1972) is the father of Christian Vande Velde .

Vande Velde was originally a swimmer , but successfully switched to track cycling. In 1968 he took part with the US team in the team pursuit of the Olympic Games, but failed in qualifying. In 1969, 1970 and 1972 he was US champion in the singles pursuit , he also won a bronze medal at the Pan American Games . At the 1972 Olympic Games , he failed in both the individual and team pursuit in qualification. After the 1972 Olympics, he turned pro and focused on the financially lucrative six-day races .

In 1979 he played a member of the Italian cycling team in the film Four Crazy Types - We All Can Make Us, None . Vande Velde is a past Vice President of US Cycling and the United States Cycling Federation , and a past member of the UCI Bahraini Sports Committee . He is Treasurer of the Midwest Regional Association of the United States Olympians and Paralympians . Vande Velde developed a portable cycling track, called "Vandedrome", which was used at the 1998 Goodwill Games in New York.
