John Yang Shudao

John Yang Shudao ( Chinese  楊樹 道 ; born April 16, 1919 in Lianjiang , Fujian , China ; † August 28, 2010 there ) was a Chinese Roman Catholic underground - Archbishop of Fuzhou . He spent over 30 years in communist detention.

Life

John Yang Shudao entered the minor seminary in Fuzhou at the age of 14 and received the sacrament of ordination in 1947 after theological and philosophical studies . During the revolution in China, he was imprisoned by the communist rulers along with other Catholic clergy and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1955. After 26 years in prison, he was released in 1981. On March 8, 1987, he was appointed bishop by the underground church and in 1988 he was arrested again and interned for three years. Since 1991 he has been imprisoned or under house arrest and constant surveillance, most recently in 2001.

In 1995 he was appointed Archbishop of Fuzhou Archdiocese .

He died in St. Theresa Parish as a result of a stroke in his home town of Lianjiang .
