Johnny Hates Jazz
Johnny Hates Jazz is a British pop band that had some successes between spring 1987 and autumn 1991, including the world hit Shattered Dreams .
history
Johnny Hates Jazz was founded in 1985 by Clark Datchler, Calvin Hayes and Mike Nocito. In their overall appearance and musical style - neat hairstyles, suit and tie as well as the soft, smooth pop songs - the band is reminiscent of Spandau Ballet . They can also be described as somewhat belated representatives of the New Romantic .
After their first single, Me and My Foolish Heart , released in the spring of 1986 and released on RAK Records , the group had a gig at the end of the year that, ironically, took place in a jazz club . They were discovered by Virgin Records and got the hoped-for contract with a major label . With the first single release under the new Shattered Dreams label in spring 1987, the trio became superstars . The following single releases from their album Turn Back the Clock , which appeared in early 1988, were only successful in Europe, especially in Great Britain. On the single of the same name, Kim Wilde sings the backing vocals because she was dating Calvin Hayes at the time.
Despite the great success, Clark Datchler left the band in the summer of 1988 because he was upset about the way the other two band members interpreted his compositions. In 1990 he recorded another solo album called Raindance . In 1989 he was replaced by Phil Thornalley for the album Tall Stories (1991). Although of the same musical quality as Turn Back the Clock the album flopped , the group went their separate ways from mid-1993.
In late 2007, Hayes and Nocito reactivated Johnny Hates Jazz with a new singer (Danny Saxon) for four live concerts on the Here and Now Tour , a series of concerts starring artists who were famous in the 1980s.
In the fall of 2009, Clark Datchler announced on his website that he would rejoin Johnny Hates Jazz and work on a new album with Mike Nocito. Calvin Hayes left the band in late 2010 and wrote a book about his father Mickie Most , who died in 2003 and who was a producer for Johnny Hates Jazz in the 1980s. In October 2010 Johnny Hates Jazz (still with Calvin Hayes) played in Singapore at an open air concert.
On May 6, 2013, the new album Magnetized was released .
