Johnny Hot

Johnny Hot (born March 25, 1932 as Julien Hoste ; † February 24, 2018 in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert ) was a Belgian jazz pianist , arranger and band leader .

Johnny Hot came from a family of musicians and began playing the piano at the age of five. He appeared early on on Radio Berchem and Radio Schaerbeek; at the age of 13 he won a prize for the best amateur pianist in a competition organized by the Hot Club de Belgique . Hot then played in the early 1950s with Jump College , a Belgian dance orchestra that he later directed. He has also performed with Sidney Bechet , Django Reinhardt , Jacques Pelzer and Slide Hampton . The first recordings were made in 1950 with The Minstrel's Club Orchestra , his Johnny Hot Trio (with Benoît Quersin , Jean Delange) and Jump College ( Jazz Vivant ). In 1951 he played with the Jack Sels All Stars (including Herman Sandy , Toots Thielemans ), in 1952 at a jam session ( Jazz at the Beaux Arts ) with Roy Eldridge , Émile Peiffer , Don Byas , James Moody , Roger Asselberghs , Paul Dubois and Kenny Clarke . In the late 1960s he was a member of the Johnny Dover Big Band; In 1972 he recorded with the Belgian Big Band under the direction of Fats Sadi . In the field of jazz he was involved in 13 recording sessions between 1950 and 1972. In later years he was a member of the Retro Jazz Orchestra (album That's My Desire ).
