Ernst Wilhelm Freiherr von Wangenheim (born August 29, 1829 in Berlin , † September 28, 1887 in Winterstein ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

origin

Ernst was a son of the Prussian Lieutenant General Alexander von Wangenheim (1792–1867) and his wife Ernestine Henriette, née von dem Borne (1797–1854). The later Prussian lieutenant general Friedrich von Wangenheim (1827-1904) was his older brother.

Military career

Wangenheim attended secondary school in Berlin and the cadet houses in Potsdam and Berlin . Then he was aggregated on May 2, 1846 as Second Lieutenant of the 1st Engineer Inspection and served in the Guard Pioneer Department . He graduated from the United Artillery and Engineering School with very good success and was assigned to the 1st engineer inspection at the end of March 1850. After brief use in the Königsberg fortification , Wangenheim was adjutant of the 2nd fortress inspection from July 1852 to April 1854 . He then came back to the Guard Pioneer Department and rose to captain by the end of May 1859 . As such, he was again adjutant of the 2nd fortress inspection from September 1859 to July 1860, was then assigned to the Department of Engineering at the War Ministry and transferred here at the beginning of October 1860. From October 28, 1863, Wangenheim acted as adjutant to the chief of Radziwill's engineering corps, and in March 1866 was promoted to major . He also held his position under Radziwill's successors von Wasserschleben and von Kameke , until Wangenheim was transferred to Mainz as an engineer officer on February 6, 1868 . Half a year after being promoted to lieutenant colonel , on December 23, 1869, he was entrusted with the management of the engineering department in the War Ministry. On July 14, 1870, Wangenheim was appointed head of this department.

After the beginning of the war against France , Wangenheim was chief of the staff of engineers during the siege of Strasbourg , was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class and returned to his peacetime position on October 17, 1870. After the war ended , he was promoted to colonel on August 18, 1871 , and on January 2, 1875, he was given the rank and fees of brigade commander. In the uniform of the War Ministry, Wangenheim was transferred to the army officers on April 1, 1876 and promoted to major general at the end of March 1876. On November 13, 1877, he was put up for disposal with the statutory pension and was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves .

He was a legal knight of the Order of St. John .

family

On March 28, 1856, Wangenheim married Cecilie von der Osten (1836–1917). The marriage resulted in the following children:
