Georg Arnold Carl von Kameke (born April 14, 1817 in Pasewalk , † October 12, 1893 in Berlin ) was a Prussian infantry general and minister of war .

Life

origin

Georg came from the old Pomeranian noble family Kameke . He was the son of the later lieutenant general Georg von Kameke (1770-1837) and his wife Henriette Luise Karoline, née Lehmann (1795-1878). His brother Hermann (1819–1889) also took up the military career and made it general of the infantry.

Military career

After attending grammar school in Stettin , Kameke joined the Prussian Army as a pioneer on January 1, 1834, as a pioneer in the 2nd Pioneer Department . From October 1, 1834 to September 30, 1836, he was assigned to the United Artillery and Engineering School for training purposes and was temporarily transferred to the Guards Pioneer Department on January 2, 1835. With the successful completion, Kameke was promoted to secondary lieutenant on September 29, 1836 and then assigned to the 1st engineer inspection. Here he served for almost a year and then returned to his home unit. In order to deepen his knowledge, Kameke was assigned to the fortress building in Poznan and to the fortification service in Königsberg . On April 27, 1848, Kameke came again for the first engineer inspection, was appointed here as second adjutant and finally rose as first lieutenant (since July 1, 1848) six months later to first adjutant.

With his promotion to captain , he was transferred to the General Staff on October 12, 1850 . After six months, Kameke was assigned to the General Staff of the VII Army Corps , where he remained for almost five years. As a major he then returned to the General Staff and was sent to the embassy in Vienna until March 15, 1858. After brief employment in the General Staff of the 1st Army Corps, he was transferred to the Department of Engineering at the War Ministry on April 15, 1858. In September 1858, Kameke accompanied Prince Karl of Prussia on an inspection tour of the Austrian federal contingent. After Kameke had become lieutenant colonel on May 31, 1859 , he was hired on October 20, 1859 to manage the business as head of the engineering department. On May 3, 1860, he was finally appointed boss. In June 1861 he was promoted to colonel and was given command of the grenadier regiment "King Friedrich III." (2nd Silesian) No. 11 ; in March 1863 he was appointed Chief of the General Staff of the VIII Army Corps . In 1865 he rose to major general and was soon appointed chief of staff of the II Army Corps .

At the German war Kameke took the chief of staff II. Corps in part. In 1867 he was given the management of the entire engineering corps . In 1868 he was promoted to lieutenant general.

In the Franco-Prussian War , Kameke led the battle of Spichern as commander of the 14th Division and also proved himself at Colombey and Gravelotte . After the surrender of the fortress Metz , he captured Diedenhofen ( Thionville ), Montmédy and besieged Mézières . Even before the fall of Mézières, he was called to Versailles on December 23, 1870 to take over the leadership of the engineering attack on Paris . For his services in this war he received a grant of 100,000 thalers. He used this sum to buy the old Hohenfelde and Niederhof family estates.

On February 18, 1871, he was appointed chief of the engineering corps and inspector general of the fortresses .

On November 9, 1873, Kameke succeeded Roons as Minister of War. On March 22, 1875 he was appointed General of the Infantry and Chief of the 2nd Hanover Infantry Regiment No. 77 . On March 3, 1883, he resigned from his offices and retired to his Hohenfelde estate near Kolberg in Pomerania .

Kameke was a knight of the Order of the Black Eagle and the Order of Pour le mérite with oak leaves. He was also a legal knight of the Order of St. John .

family

On January 9, 1862, he married Helene Emilie Charlotte Freiin von Oelsen (1839–1907) from the house of Vietnitz. The couple had the following children:
