Hermann Christlieb Matthäus Stein , von Stein since 1913 , (born September 13, 1854 in Wedderstedt , † May 26, 1927 in Lehnin ) was a Prussian artillery general and minister of war .

Life

Hermann was the son of Hermann Robert Stein (1822–1901), pastor of Wedderstedt, and Julie Friederike, née Meyer (1830–1909).

Military career

After graduating from high school, Stein joined the field artillery regiment "General-Feldzeugmeister" (1st Brandenburgisches) No. 3 of the Prussian Army in 1873 as an avantageur and in 1875 became second lieutenant . Promoted to Prime Lieutenant in 1886 while attending the War Academy , he was assigned to the General Staff in 1888 , but relieved of this command in the following year with a pre-dated patent. On September 20, 1890, he was captain of the first Westphalian Field Artillery Regiment. 7 to the general staff of 1894 and the 34th Division transferred to Metz. Promoted to major on May 30, 1896 , he joined the Great General Staff in Berlin. In 1901 he became commander of the 1st Lorraine Field Artillery Regiment No. 33 and in 1902 Lieutenant Colonel .

In 1903 he was transferred to the General Staff as head of the deployment department, was promoted to colonel here on September 15, 1905 , in 1908 commissioned with the management of the business of a quartermaster and in 1910 promoted to major general to quartermaster and soon afterwards also to a member of the study commission of the war academy appointed. On April 22, 1912, he became lieutenant general and on September 13, he took command of the 41st Division in Deutsch-Eylau .

On June 16, 1913, Stein was raised to the hereditary Prussian nobility on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the reign of Kaiser Wilhelm II .

At the beginning of the war, he served as Quartermaster General in August and September 1914 and was responsible for drafting the German Army Report. Subsequently, from September 14, 1914 was the commanding general of the XIV Reserve Corps . During the race to the sea , his corps was moved to the Combles - Bapaume area and placed under the 2nd Army . During the Battle of the Somme in July 1916, his corps was the focus of British attacks in the Thiepval area . On October 28, 1916, he handed over his corps to Lieutenant General Georg Fuchs . From October 29, 1916 to October 9, 1918 he served as Prussian Minister of War.
