18th century

In the 18th century, the actual task of minister of war, according to today's understanding, was carried out by kings Friedrich Wilhelm I and Friedrich II themselves, then by royal princes and generals who were not involved in a ministerial administration. Nevertheless, the titles “Minister of War” and “Council of War” were awarded - but these had more to do with the financing of the war; they collected taxes and administered the royal domains:

At the beginning of the 19th century there was no uniform war ministry, but two departments:

  1. General War Department
  2. Military Economics Department

Remarks

Different times are sometimes mentioned in the literature. This is because they refer to provisional assumption of office, appointment by the king and prime minister, formal inauguration; the same applies to a request for dismissal, approval of farewell and transfer of office / appointment of a successor. This can lead to gaps or overlaps, especially in turbulent times.
