Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Reyher , von Reyher since 1828 (born June 21, 1786 in Groß Schönebeck ; † October 7, 1857 in Berlin ) was a Prussian cavalry general , war minister in the government of Ludolf Camphausen during the revolution of 1848 and also since 1848 Chief of Staff.

Karl was the son of Johann Samuel Reyher, cantor and teacher of Groß Schönebeck, and his second wife Johanna Karoline, nee Eckart, the daughter of a forest clerk. His birthplace, the former village school, has been preserved.

Military career

At the age of thirteen he had to leave school and take up a job. First he began training as an official clerk before he voluntarily entered military service in 1802. He was promoted to regimental clerk in General von Winnig's infantry regiment and was soon promoted to sergeant . He took part in the war of 1806 with the entourage. After the Prussian defeat Reyher joined the Freikorps Ferdinand von Schill . This made him a sergeant and personal secretary. With Schill, Reyher switched to the 2nd Brandenburg Hussar Regiment in 1808 as a sergeant and regimental clerk . In the unauthorized actions of Schill, Reyher was wounded in 1809 and was integrated with the rest of the troops into the West Prussian Uhlan Regiment . Its commander Yorck served Reyher as an adjutant. After passing the officer's examination, he was promoted to secondary lieutenant in 1810 . At the beginning of the wars of liberation Reyher was appointed brigade adjutant and took part in the battle of Großgörschen . This was followed by the battle of Bautzen and the meeting of Reichenbach, the battle of the Katzbach and other skirmishes. Reyher was promoted to adjutant general under General Katzler . He also served in the campaign in France in 1814 to the satisfaction of his superiors and was promoted to prime lieutenant. He received the iron cross first class, which apart from him only seven other lieutenants had received during the campaign. Reyher then became an adjutant to General Yorck. During the war of 1815 Reyher was involved as a general staff officer, among other things, in the battle of Ligny and other skirmishes. He was promoted to major for his services .

After the end of the war, Reyher initially stayed with the occupation troops in France. There he taught, among other things, at a field war school. In 1818 he returned to Prussia and served on the general staff . In 1824 Reyher became Chief of the General Staff of the VI. Army Corps and on September 20, 1828 in Berlin as a major raised to the Prussian nobility . In 1830 he became chief of staff of the army corps commanded by Prince Wilhelm . In 1840 Reyher moved to the War Ministry and became head of the General War Department.

In the March Ministry Camphausen - Hansemann Reyher initially took over the War Ministry for a few weeks . He was responsible for ensuring that the capital was again occupied by the military in April after the army withdrew from Berlin in March. On May 1, 1848 Reyher became Chief of the Army General Staff. He held this position until his death. At times he was also a member of the second chamber of the Prussian House of Representatives, where he belonged to the Right.

Reyher married Ida Charlotte Baumann (born November 19, 1797 in Warsaw , † October 24, 1874 in Berlin) in Königsberg on July 31, 1820 . She was the eldest daughter of the District President Baumann. The marriage had four children:
