Georg Fuchs (born December 25, 1856 in Danzig , † September 30, 1939 in Münster ) was a Prussian infantry general .

Life

Fuchs came after his High School on April 13, 1877 cadet in the Fusilier Regiment "Graf Roon" (East Prussian) No. 33 of the Prussian army and received on February 11, 1879 his patent as a second lieutenant . From 1885 he attended the War Academy for three years and was promoted to prime lieutenant in 1888 . As such, he joined the General Staff in 1890 . As a captain , he led a company in the Magdeburg Fusilier Regiment No. 36 in Halle (Saale) from 1894 . Promoted to major in 1898 , he then taught at the War Academy for two years. As a colonel , he led the 4th Lower Alsatian Infantry Regiment No. 143 in Strasbourg from 1907 , and after being promoted to major general in April 1911, the 20th Infantry Brigade in Posen . In February 1914 he was given command of the 16th Division in Trier while being promoted to Lieutenant General .

First World War

With this he was commissioned at the beginning of the First World War on August 2, 1914 with the occupation of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg . He then fought in the association of the VIII Army Corps in the battle of Neufchâteau . At the end of August 1916 he became the commanding general of the X. Reserve Corps at the Maas Group West. At the end of October 1916 he moved to the XIV Reserve Corps as commanding general , which was in the main attack area of ​​the British 5th Army in mid-November during the Battle of the Ancre ( Battle of the Somme ) .

From March 1917 he took over the command of Army Division C between the Maas and Mosel . After the offensive of the 1st US Army , he had to give up the great promontory east of Verdun during the Battle of St. Mihiel in mid-September 1918 .

After the armistice , in December 1918, Fuchs was also given command of the 5th Army . In January 1919 he became the disposition made and on October 6, 1919 by awarding the character adopted as a general of infantry from active service.
