Roger Asselberghs

Roger Asselberghs (born May 13, 1925 in Antwerp ; † October 26, 2013 ) was a Belgian jazz musician ( saxophone and clarinet ).

Live and act

Asselberghs came from a family of musicians and initially learned the flute, harmonica and piano. He came into contact with jazz through the records of Benny Goodman , Count Basie and Artie Shaw . Then he decided on the clarinet, which he learned autodidactically. In 1944 he played in the orchestra of the guitarist Marcel Bossu, then in the quartet of Coco Colignon . With his friend Jack Sels he became a member of the Mickey Bunner Octet in 1945. In 1946/47 he played in Liège a . a. with René Thomas , Bobby Jaspar and Jacques Pelzer .

After completing his military service in 1948/49, he played the Bop-Afro-Cubain baritone saxophone in the Jack Sels Orchestra . In the following years he accompanied traveling musicians such as Sidney Bechet , Roy Eldridge , James Moody , Kenny Clarke and Buck Clayton ; In 1952 he toured with Dizzy Gillespie , Jacques Brel and Sacha Distel . After several years in the Sels Orchestra, he became a member of the Belgian Radio Orchestra under the direction of Léo Souris in 1957 and toured Africa with Les jeunesses Musicales with Souris, Benoît Quersin , Jacques Pelzer, Herman Sandy and Johnny Peret. In the field of jazz he was involved in ten recording sessions between 1950 and 1958. a. with Sidney Bechet (1951), Jack Sels and Taps Miller .
