Johnny Keating
Johnny Keating (born September 10, 1927 in Edinburgh , Scotland , † May 28, 2015 ) was a British jazz trombonist , orchestra conductor and composer .
Life
Keating became known to a wider audience in the early 1960s with the theme song for the BBC crime series Z Cars . It is based on the old folk song Johnny Todd . With this composition he reached the top ten of the British single charts in March 1962. In the late 1960s and early 1970s he also composed the music for a number of films, including for director Richard Quine Das Hotel with Rod Taylor and Karl Malden , as well as for the two Stanley Baker films Robbery of the Millions and Last Lives, Lives Best . In the field of jazz, he was involved in 54 recording sessions between 1950 and 1999, as trombonist and arranger with Vic Lewis , Ted Heath , Ronnie Scott , Cleo Laine , Tony Bennett and Carmen McRae .
