Johnny Rodríguez (singer)

Johnny Rodríguez ( Juan Losada Rodríguez Cappadocia , Juan de Capadocia Rodríguez Lozada ; born October 10, 1912 in Camuy , † February 3, 1997 in New York City ) was a Puerto Rican singer and composer.

Johnny Rodríguez was the oldest of six siblings; his brother Tito was also known as a singer. After graduating from Escuela Luchetti in San Juan, he performed on the radio station WKAQ and worked with the orchestras of Mario Dumont , Ralph Sánchez , Armando Valdespí , Rafael Muñoz and Noro Morales . In 1930 he founded the Cuarteto de Estrellas Boricuas .

In 1935 he received a contract with the RCA and went to New York, where he continued his successful career as a singer and composer. In 1940 he founded with Lalo Martínez and Manuel Jiménez , the Trio de Johnny Rodríguez , which in the time of World War II with the mission Música para las Américas at CBS became popular. In 1957, Rodríguez returned to Puerto Rico and founded the El Cotorrito nightclub , which gained international recognition for the quality of its programs.

Among Rodríguez's most famous compositions are Fichas Negras , the Rumba Campana gancho and the Bolero Divino amor . Also Jalda arriba , the anthem of the Popular Democratic Party (PDP) comes from him.
