Johnson & Johnson Vision Care is an American manufacturer of soft contact lenses (replacement and one-day contact lenses). As a division of Johnson & Johnson Medical GmbH, the company belongs to Johnson & Johnson . With the introduction of the first replacement contact lens in 1988, Johnson & Johnson Vision Care established itself in the healthcare industry.

The contact lens manufacturer employs around 3,700 people worldwide and sells contact lenses in 80 countries. The production sites are in Limerick (Ireland) and at the headquarters in Jacksonville (Florida) , USA. The European headquarters are in London (England), there are a total of 19 company offices across Europe. The business for Germany is carried out in Norderstedt in Schleswig-Holstein .

history

Johnson & Johnson Vision Care emerged from Frontier Contact Lenses, which was founded in 1959. It was acquired by Johnson & Johnson in 1981 after Frontier added soft contact lenses to its production in the late 1970s. Until 2001 the company was called Vistakon, then it was renamed Johnson & Johnson Vision Care.

Product developments

In 1988 Johnson & Johnson Vision Care (then still under the name Vistakon) brought the world's first exchange contact lens onto the market. The company introduced the world's first one-day contact lens in 1995 and the first silicone hydrogel daily contact lens in 2009, and was awarded the SILMO d'Or for both . This international award is given annually for innovations in various fields of ophthalmic optics. Since then, Johnson & Johnson Vision Care has developed various manufacturing processes (e.g. the patented Stabilized Soft Molding process for the production of soft replacement contact lenses) and technologies (including Hydraclear and Lacreon). The Acuvue product family today includes spherical, toric and multifocal contact lenses.

With the aim of opticians and doctors on topics such as In 2004, Johnson & Johnson Vision Care founded the first The Vision Care Institute (TVCI) at the company's headquarters in the USA to further educate, for example, eye health and patient communication. There are now 15 such institutes around the world that offer training seminars. In Europe, The Vision Care Institute was opened in Prague in 2006 and has since been attended by around 2,000 participants for further training seminars. A total of 70,000 people worldwide took part in the training measures (as of 2012).
