Jonathan Frank "Jon" Ashton (born August 4, 1979 in Plymouth ) is a former English football player .

Career

Ashton was a trainee in the Plymouth Argyle Youth Training Scheme in the mid-1990s before he received his first professional contract in July 1997. In his first year as a professional he came only in August 1997 to a seven-minute competitive game in the League Cup against Oxford United for the first team from Plymouth, mostly he played as a central defender in the reserve team. From December 1999 Ashton established himself as a right full-back and convinced with his speed and determination in a duel. Over the next few months he came to 26 appearances in the fourth division season 1998/99 as well as six appearances in various cup competitions. He had an unusual appearance in March 1999 at Chester City after starting goalkeeper Jon Sheffield had to be replaced after 30 minutes with a concussion. Since there was no nominal goalkeeper on the bench, the choice fell on Ashton, who conceded three goals in the following 60 minutes when his team lost 3-2. Not only players from opposing teams had to experience his tough duel. In a humorous interview from 2010, his former teammate Chris Hargreaves described Ashton as the “toughest opponent”, because he was so “awkward” in training that he regularly unintentionally played a player Cleared the flying tackle.

He received a new contract from coach Kevin Hodges for the 1999/2000 season , but was unable to build on his performance from the previous season and lost his regular place early in the season - also due to injury. After a total of only eleven competitive appearances during the season, his contract was not extended beyond the end of the season. Ashton found a new employer in local rivals and fourth division rivals Exeter City . At Exeter, he was only used regularly in the first two months before he was mostly only in the reserve team due to injury problems and the associated loss of form and received no new contract offer at the end of the season.

For the 2001/02 season he signed a two-year contract with fifth division FC Hayes , where he stood out with his robust style of play, which also earned him numerous yellow cards. After 22 competitive appearances, 19 of them in the league, his contract was dissolved again in March 2002. In the following years he played in non-league football for Dulwich Hamlet , Bodmin Town, Bridgwater Town and the Paulton Rovers , before an Achilles tendon injury forced him to end his career at the age of 26 . He has been working in the financial sector since 2003.
