Jon Stonebreaker

Jon A. Steinbrecher is an American sports official. He has been Commissioner of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) since 2009 .

Career

Steinbrecher received his BS in Physical Education and Journalism from Valparaiso University in 1983, received his Masters in Sports Administration from Ohio University in 1984, and received his PhD in Physical Education in Sports Administration from Indiana University in 1989 . He then worked in sports administration at Houston Baptist University , Indiana University and Davidson College before moving to the Mid-Continent Conference . There he was initially director of communications, director of communications and marketing and assistant commissioner. In November 1994 he was appointed Commissioner of the Conference . In 1999, he became the first non-Division IA commissioner to be elected President of the Collegiate Commissioner's Association . In 2003 he became the commissioner of the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC). There he helped the Conference gain more time on national television by signing a 5-year contract with ESPN . In 2007 he was appointed to the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Academic Enhancement Group . In September, he began a three-year tenure on the NCAA Division I Legislative Council , where he was elected vice chairman.

On March 16, 2009 Steinbrecher was elected Commissioner of the Mid-American Conference . Although he received a 5-year contract, his contract was prematurely extended for 2 years in 2011. In June 2015 he received a contract extension to 2020. He also helped the MAC to new television contracts, among others with ESPN and CBS . He also helped the conference in football to additional bowl assignments. Steinbrecher helped the conference to be successful by having more football games played in the conference in the middle of the week.
