The Jonang Monastery ( Tib. Jo nang dgon ) or Jomonang Monastery is an important monastery in the history of Tibetan Buddhism in the Phüntshogling community in the Lhatse district of Shigatse (Lhoka) in Tibet . It is located on the southern bank of the Yarlung Tsangpo at Jonang or, with its full name, Jomonang, at an altitude of 4700 m.

history

The monastery was founded in 1293 by Künpang Thugje Tsöndrü ( kun spangs thugs rje brtson 'grus ; 1243-1313). It is the founding monastery of the Jonang School of Tibetan Buddhism , whose name comes from this monastery. The monastery was later called Jonang Phüntshogling ( jo nang phun tshogs gling ). It was a place of activity of the great Jonang master Taranatha (1575–1634).

Under the “Great Fifth” Dalai Lama (1617–1682), the Jonang School was banned because of its involvement in the political turmoil of the 17th century. However, she survived in eastern Tibet, far from Lhasa.

The Jonang tradition was revived in exile under the current 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso.
