Joost Balbian , also Justus, Joos or Jodocus, also van Balbian, (born August 10, 1543 in Aalst , † May 2, 1616 in Gouda ) was a Dutch doctor and alchemist .

He was the son of a money changer from Piedmont , grew up in Aalst and Gent , studied law in Heidelberg and Orléans and medicine in Italy, where he did his doctorate in Padua. In 1569 he married Josina Fouasse in Ghent, with whom he had eight children. He converted to Calvinism and commanded a company against the Spaniards in Ghent from 1577 to 1584. After taking Ghent, he was imprisoned for a year and then moved to Delft . His wife died there in 1588, and in 1596 he remarried in Dordrecht Janneke Claes Vinkendr, with whom he had eight children and moved to Gouda after the marriage. In 1611 he became a town doctor, and in 1612 he received citizenship in Gouda.

He published a book with collections of alchemical writings and was himself an avid collector of alchemical literature (a book catalog he compiled is in the British Library). As Jodocus Greverus he published sayings of a philosopher Alanus about the philosopher's stone. Both works are reprinted in the Theatrum Chemicum .
