Joost van Vollenhoven (born July 21, 1877 in Rotterdam , † July 20, 1918 in Montgobert , France ) was a French officer and colonial clerk who came from the Dutch patrician family van Vollenhoven .

At the age of 22 - his family lived as colonists in Algeria - he was naturalized as a French. He graduated from the École coloniale in Paris with Maurice Bourgine . He became Governor General of French Indochina and was Governor General of French West Africa from 1917 until his death . He is best known for his resistance to further raising of African troops in French West Africa.
