Jordan Reyne (* in New Zealand ) is an experimental musician. Reyne's style has been described variously as "industrial-tinged folk " and "antipodal steampunk ". She mostly combines the two fundamentally different music genres folk and industrial, telling historical stories with a Celtic-melodic voice and combining them with "sounds of steam, iron and industry". Several of her publications take place during the industrial revolution .

Life

Reyne grew up in a remote community around 30 kilometers south of Westport on the west coast of New Zealand's South Island. As a teenager she moved to the north of New Zealand, where she studied software engineering at the Central Institute of Technology in Wellington . Later she studied in Auckland philosophy at the " University of Auckland ." She then emigrated to Germany in 2006 and moved to Great Britain in 2011.She has lived in Toruń, Poland, since 2017 .

Reyne has been nominated three times for the New Zealand Music Awards and has released six full-length albums, including several produced with support from the New Zealand Arts Council's Creative New Zealand Foundation. The “Arts Council and Department of Conservation” initiated and supported Jordan's album “How the Dead Live” (2009), which deals with the arrival of the first pioneer in New Zealand from London in 1874. Her most recent publication "Children of a Factory Nation" (2012) fits in with this time in history. It tells the historically documented story of a Welsh family from near Cardiff in the 1880s who dispersed in workhouses in London after their father died at sea.

Reyne performed live between 1999 and 2005 under the name "Dr Kevorkian & the Suicide Machine". Two of her albums were also released under this name, which drew the attention of the international darkwave and steampunk scene and spurred Reyne to move to Germany in 2006. Reyne's musical style is equally located in the Darkfolk , Industrial and Gothic scenes as well as in New Zealand electronic music, for example the projects Strawpeople, Zane Lowe's Breaks Co-op Project, Baitercell and Schumacher. Furthermore, emerged a common song between Reyne and Johnny Chrome, which on the "25th Anniversary Album" from Café del Mar was published. She sang a song for the scene of Theodred's funeral in the second film in Peter Jackson'sLord of the Rings ” trilogy ; the funeral scene was not used for the film, however.
