Jorge Island ( Spanish Isla Jorge ) is a small island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . In the group of the Aitcho Islands in the English Strait , it is 800 m southeast of the Passage Rock .
It was named by participants in the 4th Chilean Antarctic Expedition (1949–1950). It is named after Jorge Duarte, son of José Duarte, the captain of the Lautaro ship on this research trip . The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee translated this designation into English in 1971.
