Jorge de Paiva

Jorge de Paiva ( May 13, 1887 - May 12, 1937 ) was a Portuguese fencer .

Career

Paiva began fencing in 1910 and initially chose the sword as a weapon. Through his fencing master Carlos Gonçalves, he made contact with a group of fencers with whom he won a number of national and international titles. Between 1920 and 1928 he was a member of the Portuguese foil team at the Olympic Games three times. In Antwerp 1920 and Paris 1924 , the team finished fourth. The greatest success was winning the bronze medal in the foil team competition at the Summer Olympic Games in Amsterdam together with Mário de Noronha , Paulo d'Eça Leal , Frederico Paredes , João Sassetti and Henrique da Silveira .

In his hometown of Cacilhas, the Praceta Jorge de Paiva was named after him.
