José Ángel Ziganda (born October 1, 1966 in Larráinzar ) is a Spanish football coach and former player.
Player career
In his career, "Cuco" Ziganda always remained connected to his homeland, so that in his 14 professional years he only appeared for CA Osasuna and Athletic Bilbao . As an active player, he was an extremely successful goalscorer. He has a total of 145 hits in official competitions (111 in the Primera División , 19 in the Segunda División , nine in the UEFA Cup and six in the Copa del Rey ).
In the course of his career, he completed two international matches for the Spanish national team . He came on April 17, 1991 in a 2-0 defeat against Romania and September 7, 1994 in a 2-1 win over Cyprus for a short assignment.
Coaching career
For the 2006/07 season, Cuco Ziganda took over the coaching position from Mexican Javier Aguirre, who had moved to Atlético Madrid . After a weak start and elimination in qualifying for the UEFA Champions League , the inexperienced coach was quickly faced with an early end, but with four wins in a row and progressing in the Copa del Rey , Ziganda was able to save his job. At the end of the season they had kept up well in the Copa del Rey and only failed in the UEFA Cup semi-finals against eventual winners Sevilla FC .
On October 13, 2008, Ziganda was dismissed at CA Osasuna after a weak start to the season with only four points from the first six games. He then coached Deportivo Xerez from 2009 to 2010 and has been the coach of the amateur team of the first division Athletic Bilbao since 2011 . There he was appointed in May 2017 as the successor to Ernesto Valverde , who had switched to FC Barcelona , and introduced as the new head coach of the professional team.
He left Bilbao after the 2017/18 season.
