José Relvas

José Carlos de Mascarenhas Relvas (born March 5, 1858 in Golegã , † October 31, 1929 in Alpiarça ) was a Portuguese politician. From January 27 to March 30, 1919 he was Prime Minister of his country.

José Relvas studied law at the University of Coimbra , but left it without a degree. He was a staunch Republican and a member of the Republican Party since his youth . On October 5, 1910, he proclaimed the Portuguese Republic from the balcony of the City Hall in Lisbon . In the provisional government of Teófilo Braga , he served as Minister of Finance . He later represented his country as an envoy in Madrid . In 1919 he was head of government of his country for about two months and led one of the many unstable governments of the first republic . He also took over the post of interior minister . The government of José Relvas went down in history as the "government of republican concentration" because it represented all the different currents of republicans ( democrats , evolutionists and unionists ). Relvas himself belonged to the Democratic Party.
