José Escolástico Andrino (* 1817 in Guatemala City , † July 14, 1862 in San Salvador ) was a Guatemalan composer , violinist and music writer.

Life

José Escolástico Andrino learned to play the violin and composition from his older brother, the violin virtuoso Máximo Andrino. After completing his training, he worked as a violinist in the opera theater in Havana , Cuba . After his return to Guatemala City , he finally settled in San Salvador , El Salvador , from 1845 onwards . Here he worked as an organist in the cathedraland violin and composition teacher in his own music school. He later became an official of the city and designed a new system for the post office, which remained in effect for a long time. Andrino is the first Central American composer to have a concertante instrumental work, namely the theme with variations in G major for violin and orchestra . His opera La mora generosa (The Generous Moor) was possibly performed in Guatemala City in 1857 in the Variedades Theater. His symphony in D major, found by the composer Esteban Servellón , is a work in classical symphonic form and early Romantic style.

As a composer, Andrino is familiar with the classical style, while his Villancicos show rhythmic and melodic elements of Guatemalan folk music. His book Nociones de filarmonía y apuntes para la historia de la música (San Salvador, 1847) is of great importance for the music history of Central America and has been cited by music historians such as José Sáenz Poggio (1878) and Rafael Vásquez (1950).
