José Gabriel Funes

José Gabriel Funes SJ (born January 31, 1963 in Cordoba ) is an Argentine Jesuit and astronomer . He was director of the Vatican Observatory from 2006 to 2015 .

Life

His master's degree in astronomy, he graduated from the National University of Cordoba in Argentina and has been at the University of Padua in Italy Doctor of Astronomy PhD . In addition, he earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy from the University del Salvador in Argentina and in theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome . He was ordained a priest in 1995 . He came to the Vatican Observatory as a researcher in 2000 and was appointed successor to then director George Coyne on August 19, 2006 . On September 18, 2015, Guy Consolmagno SJ replaced him in the position of director.
