José Greco

José Greco (actually Costanzo Greco Bucci ; born December 23, 1918 in Montorio nei Frentani , † December 31, 2000 in Lancaster , USA ) was an Italian flamenco dancer and choreographer .

Life

At the age of ten, Greco, who later officially took his stage name, moved with his parents to New York City , where he and his sister took dance lessons in Brooklyn. In 1937 he made his debut at the Hippodrome Theater in Manhattan and danced alongside well-known partners such as La Argentinita (Encarnación López, approx. 1895/98 - 1945) and Pilar López in Ballet Español . In 1948 he founded his own Ballets y Bailes de Españawith whom he made his debut in Paris and then in Barcelona and then went on numerous tours. In 1951 they performed for the first time in Great Britain, later also in other European countries and the United States, thus bringing great attention to Spanish dance. In 1953, 19,000 people saw its performance in New York City. Greco has received numerous honors, including from the Spanish government. In addition, Greco starred in a handful of films.

In 1972 he founded the José Greco Foundation for Hispanic Dance to promote this art form. A first retreat into private life was followed in 1974 by an autobiography, the 1977 book Gypsy in my Soul and a comeback in the late 1980s when he founded a dance company with his children (he has three sons and three daughters with his wife Ana Borger-Greco ) . Greco appeared on stage for the last time in 1995, while he continued to work as a visiting professor of dance in his adopted city of Lancaster .
