José Joaquim Nunes

José Joaquim Nunes (born December 4, 1859 in Portimão , † July 20, 1932 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese Romanist , Lusitanist and dialectologist .

life and work

Nunes attended the seminary in Faro and was ordained a Catholic priest in 1882. He was a military chaplain in Lagos (Portugal) , Santarém (Portugal) and Beja (Portugal) , but at the same time taught at high schools and published dialectological and ethnographic research on the Algarve region . The Portuguese Revolution of 1910 prompted him to resign from the priesthood and get married. He became a high school teacher in Lisbon and a professor at the Military Academy. In 1913, the Academia das Ciências de Lisboa appointed him a corresponding member (full member 1926), and in 1914 the University of Lisbon appointed him extraordinary professor of classical philology. In 1917 he received his doctorate cumulatively and was then full professor until his retirement in 1929 (from 1928 also dean).
