José Manuel Vicuña

José Manuel Vicuña (born August 17, 1972 in Copiapó , Chile ) is a Chilean photographer.

He shows his works in thematic exhibitions, most recently in 2005 in Madrid under the title "Tempestades" (storm sky) and in 2007 in Berlin under the title "Túneles - mundo subterráneo" (tunnel - underground world).

José Manuel Vicuña is the son of an emigrated French animator and a Chilean industrialist who sponsors the local art scene.

Life

Vicuña is interested in photography and painting from an early age . After unsuccessful attempts with oil paintings, he concentrated on photography. First he photographs people, landscapes and everyday scenes in his home country. At the age of 17 he dropped out of school and made trips to Europe and Asia , where he was always accompanied by his camera. At the age of 19 he returned to Chile and began training in his father's company, but also dropped out. He does internships with various photographers in Santiago de Chile and New York . At the age of 21 he started working as a police photographer in Santiago de Chile, but clashed with the authorities and quit. He then took photos for various local daily newspapers and agencies until he became self-employed as an art photographer at the age of 24. Exhibitions follow in Chile, Argentina , Brazil and Mexico , and later also in Europe.

From 1998 to 2003 he was a leading member of the Chilean photographer group " Ojos de Chile " (Eyes of Chile).
