José María Bermúdez de Castro
José María Bermúdez de Castro Risueño (born June 18, 1952 in Madrid ) is a Spanish paleoanthropologist . He became internationally known as the first author of the first description of Homo antecessor .
Bermúdez de Castro is Director at the Centro Nacional de Investigación sobre la Evolución Humana (CENIEH; National Center for the Study of Human Evolution) in Burgos and heads the CENIEH's Anthropology of Teeth Working Group .
He studied biology at the Complutense University of Madrid , where he also received his doctorate in 1985. Since 1991 he has been co-director of the excavations in the fossil sites in the Sierra de Atapuerca .
