José María Martinez Salinas (* 1780 ; † in Comayagua ) was from January 1 to May 28, 1837 and September 3 to November 12, 1838 Supremo Director of the Province of Honduras within the Central American Confederation .

Life

His parents were Estefanía Salinas and Crisanto Martínez. In 1820 he married Margarita Chaves Guillen.

He ended the term of office of Joaquín Rivera Bragas as Supremo Director, to which the parliament appointed him, since he was the oldest member of the parliament. Francisco Ferrera was his deputy. During this term he prepared a constitutional provincial government. On May 28, 1837, in accordance with the Constitution of 1825, Parliament elected Justo Vicente José de Herrera y Díaz del Valle as Supremo Director.

The Partido Conservador provoked the proclamation of a constituent assembly with the aim of dissolving the Central American Confederation. Justo José Herrera convened a constituent assembly on June 1, 1838, which suspended the constitution of 1825. The constituent assembly, which met on June 16, 1838, was ruled by separatists and adopted a law to dissolve which the Consejo Federal , which had met in El Salvador (then synonymous with San Salvador), had decided that the republics of the República de Centro America are free and independent. Justo José Herrera handed over the position of Supremo Director back to José María Martinez Salinas on September 3, 1838 for health reasons.

The constituent assembly met in Comayagua on October 7, 1838 , chaired by Juan Lindo , and the secretary was the Comayagua MP, Francisco Aguilar. On November 5, 1838, the Constituent Assembly proclaimed the independence of Honduras from the República de Centro América . At this constituent assembly, it was found that the province of Honduras had a population of 200,000. On October 26, 1838, Honduras declared itself a separate state under the provincial government of José María Martinez Salinas. The corresponding decree is dated November 12, 1838. Martinez signed this decree and issued pardons for separatist insurgents from 1827 and 1829. He then handed over his post to José Lino Matute for health reasons.

Francisco Ferrera participated in the dispute with the federal government under José Francisco Morazán Quezada , which led to the separation of Honduras. On April 5, 1839, his troops and those of Nicaragua were defeated by the forces of Morazán at the Battle of Espíritu Santo in El Salvador. On September 25, 1839, the troops of Honduras were surprised in San Pedro Perulapán and Francisco Ferrera injured, after which he fled to Nicaragua .
