Juan Nepomuceno Fernández Lindo y Zelaya briefly Juan Lindo (* 16th May 1790 in Tegucigalpa , Honduras; † 23. April 1857 in Gracias, in the Lempira Department , Honduras ) was on January 7, 1841 to February 1, 1842 President of El Salvador and President of Honduras from February 12, 1847 to January 31, 1852.

Life

Lindo comes from a latifundist family. He belonged to the Partido Conservador . In 1814 he became a lawyer (Licenciado en Derecho) at the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala . After graduating, he worked for the Spanish colonial administration. After Central America gained independence from Spain in 1821, he was governor of the Comayagua province. Juan Lindo suggested the annexation of Central American provinces by the Mexican empire under Agustín de Itúrbide .

In 1826 he was elected a member of the Parliament of Honduras. In 1827 he supported José Justo Milla Pineda in his uprising and coup d'état against José Dionisio de la Trinidad de Herrera y Díaz del Valle . He was a member of the constituent assembly, which was elected in June 1838, and represented the Partido Conservador there . As a member of parliament, he supported the separation of Honduras from the Federación Centroamericana in October 1838.

Presidency in El Salvador

In 1840 he traveled to El Salvador, where Francisco Malespín made him his President of El Salvador. From 1840 to 1841 he was Minister and from 7 January 1841 to 1 February 1842 he was elected Supremo Director. Lindo ordered the establishment of schools in communities with over 150 inhabitants by the communities. During his reign, El Salvador separated from the Federación Centroamericana and he ordered the establishment of the Universidad Nacional de El Salvador.

Presidency in Honduras

In 1842 he returned to Honduras and settled in Ciudad de Comayagua in the Comayagua department . He was elected President of Honduras by parliament and held this office from February 12, 1847 to January 31, 1852. In this office he decreed the establishment of the Universidad del Estado de Honduras.

Pacto de Chinandega

On March 29, 1844, the Pacto de Chinandega was concluded in Ciudad San Vicente in San Vicente in El Salvador . In this alliance, Fruto Chamorro Pérez Supremo Delegado , Juan Lindo Council President and Justo José Herrera was Minister of the Board. The parliament of Honduras accepted the resolutions on April 27, 1844. The parliaments in El Salvador and Nicaragua were satisfied, but did not ratify the following resolutions. The government of Guatemala did not comment and when pressed to respond, it was declared that Parliament had declared the Federación Centroamericana dissolved on April 17, 1839 . It could not have been expected that this Parliament could approve the Pacto de Chinandega .

Lindo amends the 1848 constitution, which provided for a four-year presidential term. This enabled him to be elected for a second term, which he ended on February 1, 1852.

In the second term of office, General José Santos Guardiola Bustillo, appointed by Lindo, made an uprising against parliament and tried to capture Francisco Ferrera and Coronado Chávez, who were intriguing against Lindo. Felipe Bustillo, who had assumed the presidency, fled to Copán and Lindo became president again. Ferrera and Chavez fled to El Salvador. Guardiola later revolted against Lindo, but was defeated and voluntarily went into exile.

In his second term he formed an alliance with the President of El Salvador, Doroteo Vasconcelos Vides , to declare war on the government of José Rafael Carrera Turcios in Guatemala. Allied troops invaded Guatemala and were defeated by Guatemalan troops in the Battle of San José La Arada on February 2, 1851.
